TripleW’s Port of Antwerp Flagship Project (acronym: FUTURE) aims to build and operate a lactic acid production installation in the NextGen District, Port of Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium), introducing groundbreaking technology to convert food waste into high-purity lactic acid (LA), which could be used to produce polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable bioplastic.
By utilizing food waste instead of food crops as feedstock the flagship contributes to the decarbonization of food waste. The technology is unique in its ability to produce high-purity lactic acid without generating gypsum by-products, making it highly scalable, more sustainable and cost-effective.The project will employ a standalone facility model, enhancing operational flexibility and scalability. By maximally focusing on upcycling, circularity, and the use of renewable energy, the flagship will contribute to significant GHG emissions avoidance. For instance, the project can avoid at least 83,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over ten years, equivalent to the emissions of approximately 17,000 cars over the same period.
